Doral launches "Women of success"


Doral Bank announced the creation of the women programme (d) success, aimed at promoting the professional and economic development of Puerto Rican women. The program will involve an investment of $1 million during the first year's Doral and will have three main components, each designed to meet women of various socio-economic levels at different stages of their professional and business development. There will be a program of internship for college students, a Fund for programs of micro-loans, donations and loans to small businesses run by women.

In addition to facilitating access to capital, the women programme d success aims to offer training and mentoring, experiences and "networking" opportunities to promote business and professional enrichment of participants. Also, all aspects of the programme will have interaction with Women's Leadership Network, Internet portal created by Doral in 2010 that provides valuable information and discussion forums on topics of interest to women in business.
One of the components of the programme is a boarding school for university students in partnership with the University of Puerto Rico's Bayamon and the University of Turabo. A total of 10 students will be the year of the boarding school.
In addition, a special fund, in partnership with the Community Foundation of Puerto Rico, has been created to support the development of micro-loans programs in non-profit organizations specialized in supporting low-income women. The Fund begins the first year with a contribution of $100,000 Doral.
On the other hand, opens a call for proposals to award $50,000 to five small businesses run by women that show growth potential. Of that amount, $25,000 will be awarded in the form of donation and $25,000 as a loan, the repayment will go to nurture Fund Doral.
Women now constitute 54% of the population of Puerto Rico and also represents 45% of the workforce.
"The female segment plays an increasingly important role in the economy of Puerto Rico.""For this reason, Doral convinced that as women have greater opportunities for growth, the country's economy also will strengthen", said Glen Wakeman, President and principal executive officer of Doral Financial Corporation.
A Committee of women entrepreneurs will be responsible for the selection of the companies in the launch business programme. The Committee shall be composed of Hilary Hattler, President of Telemundo PR; Carla Haeussler, Chairman of Carla's Sweets; Atty.. María Teresa Szendrey, partner in the firm of lawyers Fiddler, Gonzalez and Rodriguez; CPA Dervin Cabassa, Senior Tax Manager of the firm Scherrer Hernández & Co.; YSA de Jesús, founder of Alive; Ileana Font, LIH advertising agency. Lucienne giant, senior public relations and marketing of Doral Bank Vice-President, will also support the Committee.
Giant explained that "Women d success is a continuation of our commitment to the Puerto Rican women expressed in the past through initiatives such as Pink, route Pink and Women Leadership Network, and now expanded to include the economic issue through a program long term designed to provide tangible tools for women entrepreneurs and future entrepreneurs of all levels".
